The island of Taiwan is located in the Pacific Ocean off the southeast coast of China, separated by the Strait of Taiwan. Taiwan has a population of over 23 million people. Famous for its Information industry, Taiwan is among the world's top suppliers of both information hardware and IC products. In the upper half of year 2001, Taiwan's notebook PCs, motherboards and scanners continued to enjoy a global market share of about 50% in spite of production cutback. Taiwan's deregulation of telecommunications in 1996 has stimulated fast growth in telecom services and the communications product industry. In the year 2001, the mobile phone penetration rate reached over 95%, and many of the world's leading venders of GSM cell phones have placed their ODM orders with Taiwan manufacturers. With persistent upgrading of technology, Taiwan aspires to become the Asia Pacific Regional R&D center. Formerly called 〝Formosa〞or beautiful island by the Portugese, Taiwan is endowed with a wide-variety of breathtaking natural scenery, from the world-class Taroko Gorge to the splendid corals reefs and beaches of Kenting. The island is also rich in rare species of wild birds. Taipei, the largest city in Taiwan, serves as a spectacular conference site with many amenities, events, and unique places to enjoy. GLOBECOM2002 will be held in Taipei International Convention Center which offers the best meeting facilities on the island. The city also boasts of world-class hotel accommodation. Renowned international hotel chains such as Hyatt have pampered visitors to Taiwan for many years. If you're fond of scenic panoramas, the Shin Kong Tower provides a birds eye view of the cityscape, making it a great escape both night and day. If ethnic food is your fancy, a trip to Shih Lin or Huahsi Street night markets will satisfy your mouthwatering taste treats. Taipei is an ultimate gourmets' paradise.
